Construction has begun on the much anticipated Splash Pad at Rotary Park at Wongaling Beach. When finished, the Splash Pad will provide visitors and families with a panoramic view of the renowned “Family Group of Islands”.
The Splash Pad will incorporate computer controlled water features including major water spray activity, five water room mushrooms, three water cannons, 25 ground pop up jets, and the 400 litre ‘Bucket-O-Fun’, all separated into two play areas to accommodate for a range of ages.
Cassowary Coast Regional Council Mayor John Kremastos said he is excited for the Splash Pad to bring extra spotlight upon our region.
“We live in one of the most beautiful parts of the world, and it’s wonderful to see we will have another asset to attract families and visitors to our region,” said Mayor Kremastos.
The Rotary Club of Mission Beach treasurer Ru Carslake said the idea was conceived by the organisation in 2011.
“It’s not only to boost our tourism industry, but it’s to provide a fun, safe, free place for our local families, especially during the hot summer months when the presence of stingers means swimming the ocean is out of bounds,” said Carslake.
The Splash Pad will add to the range of activities in the region for visitors to experience, and make a positive contribution to increasing the length of stay in Mission Beach and visitor expenditure, especially during summer.
The Rotary Club of Mission Beach will soon run a competition to name the Splash Pad.
“We are all about the community, so we want to keep the name local, while having input from the locals,” said Carslake.
“Keep a look out over the next month or two for our competition to name this facility.”
The Splash Pad is expected to be completed by June and opened by August, with the winner of the naming competition to be announced on opening day.
Under the Tourism Demand Driver Infrastructure Program, the Splash Pad was funded by Rotary Mission Beach and the Australian Government, administered by the Queensland Government.
The Rotary Club of Mission Beach continues to operate three markets per month, maintain more than 60 stinger stations along the regions beaches, publish a free walking and cycling map, and support a wide range of youth programs and other community initiatives.
“We do so much for the community, but with an aging group we are becoming desperately short of helpers,” said Carslake.
“In order for us to continue to provide these beneficial services, and fund more free community and tourism boosting facilities, we need your help.”
