The Cassowary Coast Regional Council is set to release the tender document for the lease of the Dunk Island Spit area for commercial purposes including recreational and tourism activities.
Council understands and values the importance the Dunk Island Spit has to the Mission Beach region and its greater economic development.
Council believes there needs to be a wider discussion around the tender process given the successful tenderer will hold the lease as a 10+10+10 arrangement which equates to a 30 years lease.
“As custodians of the region we are creating a vision for the future of the Dunk Island Spit so it is critical that we get this right. This is the reason why the process of has been lengthy and incredibly thorough,” Cr Wayne Kimberley said.
As a result of this process, Council is better informed about business and community interest in the Spit area and the diversity in possible provision of facilities, infrastructure and services for this site.
Currently Mr Adam Bond, owner of Dunk Island Resort is responsible for the maintenance of the facilities located in the Dunk Island Spit area. An agreement will remain in place whereby Mr Bond will continue to provide sewerage, water and cleaning facilities and operate the bar. The operation and maintenance of common areas will remain solely Mr Bond’s responsibility from 18 November 2017 until 31 March, 2018 and will also include the bar from 1 December, 2017 until 31 March, 2018.
All camping bookings will be handled by Mission Beach Water Taxi.
The tender will be advertised in the print media on Saturday 25 November, 2017.
