From next week until December, 2017 the region’s annual coconut de-nutting program begins.
Specialist contractors have been employed by the Cassowary Coast Regional Council to scale and de-nut coconut trees from Flying Fish Point to Cardwell. The program will target trees along Council controlled public parks, walking tracks and beach accesses and is implemented to reduce the possibility of falling coconuts and the risk to the general public.
All inspections of the trees are undertaken by qualified arborists to ensure they are healthy and if any trees are deemed unsafe and require removal this will be done in conjunction with the arborist and the Council.
Cassowary Coast Regional Council Councillor Ben Heath said, “Living in North Queensland, this is an essential part of our maintenance program and public safety is paramount with qualified contractors employed to undertake the coconut de-nutting program”.
Councillor Heath said, “The program reduces the risk of injuries from falling coconuts and is also a good opportunity for trees to be inspected for diseases as in some instances a tree may need to be removed for safety reasons. This of course is a last resort and only after consultation between the arborist and the Council.”
