Cassowary Coast Regional Council (CCRC) has jumped on board the Straw No More challenge in an effort to rid the region of single use plastic straws. Earlier this week, Mayor John Kremastos was approached by the founder of the Straw No More Project Molly Steer to take on the challenge.Today the CCRC unanimously agreed to set a goal of removing straws and other single-use plastics, and to look at supporting local businesses to make the same change.“We are a Reef Guardian Council and we need to do more to protect our region’s environment and the Great Barrier Reef that sits on our coastline,”
Mayor Kremastos said at today’s Committee Meeting.“We will start by phasing out plastic straws and single use plastics within Council and encourage the region’s markets, events and functions to begin the reduction.“In line with Molly’s vision, we would eventually like to see the complete removal of plastics from the community and all businesses.”
Molly said she was ecstatic to have another Council on board.“Today is another great win and I’m feeling really excited to have the Cassowary Coast join this project,” said 10-year-old Molly.“This is one step closer to the Great Barrier Reef being plastic free which will help to save our turtles, coral and sea animals.”Molly said her long term goal is to have all Council’s across Australia be a part of the project. CCRC is the third Council to join the Straw No More campaign, alongside Cairns Regional Council and Moreton Bay Regional Council.Mayor Kremastos said he is now on the hunt to push his neighbours.“Come on Hinchinbrook Shire Council – it might just be your turn!” said Mayor Kremastos.
