It was further proven in a court trial, during the altercation he purposely rode his horse towards the elderly woman and her dog.

As a result of the cowardly attack, his horse struck the elderly woman on the left ankle causing a serious cut and serious shock of being ran down on purpose by a horse.

On August 1st 2021 following an investigation into the assault, police located Philip John Westaway and charged him with serious assault of a person over 60.

In a trial at the Tully Courthouse on the 3rd of June 2022 Philip John Westaway was found guilty of serious assault by using his horse as a weapon on the 69 year-old woman on the beach.

Philip John Westaway deliberately charged his horse and ran down the 69 year-old elderly lady and then after abusing the poor lady, Philip John Westaway took off down the beach on horseback with out even trying to give aid to the serious cut and the shock of the serious attack the 69 year-old woman endured.

Philip John Westaway is a local hairdresser running a business called Philip-Jon Hairstylist formally known as “Wet Hairdressing” and has been known to cause major issues in the community, now found guilty of serious assault of an elderly woman, who wants a person like Philip John Westaway in the community with cowardly behaviour of using a potentially deadly weapon such as a horse to attack a elderly woman on the beach just walking her dog.

The Real Truth About the 2016 Australia Day Fireworks https://www.missionnews.com.au/the-real-truth-about-the-2016-australia-day-fireworks/ https://www.missionnews.com.au/the-real-truth-about-the-2016-australia-day-fireworks/#respond Wed, 28 Jul 2021 02:40:25 +0000 https://www.missionnews.com.au/?p=3556

There has been a very small number of people claim Mr Rodney F Young didn’t hold the fireworks display by Explore Mission Beach on Australia Day in 2016 to start the new business.

MBN is releasing all the evidence that Mr Young had in fact done the event from start to finish to set the record right once and for all. All the paperwork is in Mr Young’s name you may note.

One person making the false claims Mr Young didn’t do the Australia Day fireworks in 2016 to start the new business Explore Mission Beach was Philip John Westaway from formally known as Wet Hair Salon.

Here’s a link to the offical event page by Explore Mission Beach.

Around the 10th of January 2016 Mr Young started to hire a fireworks company and was seeking funds from other businesses in the area to crowd fund the costs. In two weeks the funds were raised and all the permits approved.

Below is the legal agreement to the fireworks and the invoice to Mr Rodney F Young.

Below is a email on the 25th of January 2016 showing payments of $3,248 with $300 yet to be paid by Castaways that the fireworks company was happy to get Castaways money after the event on the 26th of January 2016

Please note, a agreement was reached with Mark Jennings that the $200 from Wet Hair Salon was to be void and returned and Mackay Bananas was to take Wet Hair Salon’s place as a contributor as $200 was gifted to the crowd funding project to make the fireworks happen by Mackay Bananas.

Below is a email from Mark Jennings containing the permit to the fireworks display.

You can view a copy of the permit on the following link

On the 16th of January 2016 after declining to help put funds towards the crowd funding project, Philip John Westaway turned to Facebook basically claiming Mr Young was a scammer to the business community.

At about the same time as Philip John Westaway was defaming Mr Young on social media, Mr Young was emailing Art Print Frames as Roger gladly provided his services at no cost to design and print the official promotion of the event by Explore Mission Beach.

As you can tell Mr Young had done the event, however the false claims by a very small group of people setting up hate and defamation pages on social media and keep claiming Mr Young didn’t do the fireworks.

Philip John Westaway lies to the court https://www.missionnews.com.au/philip-john-westaway-lies-to-the-court/ https://www.missionnews.com.au/philip-john-westaway-lies-to-the-court/#comments Sat, 20 Mar 2021 05:06:25 +0000 https://www.missionnews.com.au/?p=3371 In January 2021 Philip John Westaway made a Peace and Good Behaviour complaint against Mr Rodney F Young at the Tully Courthouse claiming that between August 2020 and January 2021 Mr Young had loitered outside Philip John Westaway’s business and made threats against Philip John Westaway and his business.

This is where Philip John Westaway has completely lied to the court as Mr Young was never in Mission Beach between August 2020 and January 2021 and Philip John Westaway has effectively committed perjury that is a very serious offence where Philip John Westaway could go to jail.

This is not the only falsehood by Philip John Westaway and there is more to come about this blatant abuse of court process.

“A person can not be in two places at once”

Rodney F Young

On the 1st of April 2021 Philip John Westaway was upset Mr Young was not at court with judge stating the reason why Mr Young was not in Mission Beach as claimed by Philip John Westaway between August 2020 to January 2021 as Mr Young is unwell to travel.

On the 22nd of April the matter was mentioned at the Tully Courthouse where Mr Young had petitioned the court for mediation to settle the matter, the judge endorsed the mediation to take place.

Philip John Westaway claims he has done nothing, another lie to the court.

On the 3rd of June 2021 the matter was dismissed by the judge as Philip John Westaway failed to attend court!

On the 10th of June 2021 the matter was mentioned in the Tully Courthouse with the judge stating that he had dismissed the matter in error. The judge also noted there was no evidence of any threats made in Philip John Westaway’s application and evidence.

In court Philip John Westaway made a ridiculous false claim that Mr Young threaten his horses, this is subject of a defamation case to be filed in the courts for this total lie as no threats were ever made at all about any horses 🤥

On the 17th of June 2021 at the Tully Courthouse Philip John Westaway withdraw his complaint.

The matter is now closed!!!

Craig Tatnell Defaming Community Members https://www.missionnews.com.au/craig-tatnell-defaming-community-members/ https://www.missionnews.com.au/craig-tatnell-defaming-community-members/#respond Fri, 19 Feb 2021 13:13:58 +0000 https://www.missionnews.com.au/?p=3217 Craig Tatnell who runs Above Ground Zero Fireworks in Townsville has had a post on his Facebook business page removed for defamation by Facebook.

On the 5th of December 2019 Mr Tatnell posted defaming information about a person who had hired Above Ground Zero Fireworks to conduct a fireworks display.

Mr Tatnell even paid Facebook to promote the defaming post.

Early in February 2021 a formal defamation report was made with Facebook, with Facebook taking the quick action of removing the post for violating their Terms of Service on defamation.

In this post Mr Tatnell lied about the band U2 playing for free in Mission Beach and later admitted he had planted the fake story in a local paper.

The owner of the paper was not fooled by the lies of Mr Tatnell and in mediation the story was fully retracted about U2 playing for free in Mission Beach, as per the non-confidential agreement below.

Mr Tatnell who has now become known in the community as “Pinocchio” had also lied and was dishonest to gain a benefit over another, falsely claiming that anyone is required to be registered in order to fundraise to hold community fireworks in Queensland under the Collections Act 1966 (The Act)

The Queensland Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Leader of the House had determined that there is no need to be registered under “The Act” and full evidence community members was totally dishonest in their false claims.

This post removed by Facebook is not a isolated incident of defamation on Facebook by Mr Tatnell with a number of other posts and comment containing defamation.

Sources have it, a pending lawsuit for defamation is set to be formally lodged with the courts against Mr Tatnell in the coming weeks.

Mission Beach News has requested a comment on the record from Mr Tatnell who has refused to put a comment on the record to this date.

Will The Real Explore Mission Beach Please Stand Up – Part One https://www.missionnews.com.au/will-the-real-explore-mission-beach-please-stand-up-part-one/ https://www.missionnews.com.au/will-the-real-explore-mission-beach-please-stand-up-part-one/#respond Tue, 26 Jan 2021 05:31:35 +0000 https://www.missionnews.com.au/?p=3173 At the start of December 2020 Mission Beach Tourism Inc., a local not for profit tourism group, started using the name “Explore Mission Beach” on their Facebook page, however from 2015 the travel agency “Explore Mission Beach” was registered as a registered business by a local private company and started to claim the brand name and trademark of “Explore Mission Beach”.

How can two travel centres’ even think of using the same name and begs the question, “Will The Real Explore Mission Beach Stand Up” ❓

Mission Beach News reached out to Tropical Coast Tourism, another not for profit group in the tourism industry for a comment on the record and they refused to add a comment on the record.

What is more interesting that in 2015 Mission Beach Tourism Inc. agreed in writing, not to use the business name and claimed trademark & brand name of “Explore Mission Beach” leading to wonder why a not-for-profit group to attempt to close down the legal owner of the business name & trademark & brand name of “Explore Mission Beach” and the story becomes interesting due to several reasons.

The main issue is the new incoming president Nancy Lowe of Tropical Coast Tourism from Mission Beach Dunk Island Water Taxi & Mission Beach Dive, has been publicly defaming the real owner of “Explore Mission Beach” PMAJDT Pty Ltd, a local company owned by Mr Rodney F Young and there is where the plot thickens!!!

Firstly, Nancy Lowe in 2019 dishonesty claimed that a small new group called New Year’s Eve Association, was not registered to run as a group and fundraise for community firework on New Year’s Eve in Mission Beach to see the end of 2019 and welcome 2020, however later is proven to be dishonest information & defamation of the new group members that the Minister for Justice & Leader of the house of the Queensland Government had determined no one is required to be registered under law to fundraise for community fireworks.

After the dishonest claims Nancy Lowe started to stalk and harass the real owner of “Explore Mission Beach” Mr Young to the point police had to be called and Facebook removing several bullying and harassment posts and comments by Nancy Lowe to the point of advising Mr Young to mow his yard as the grass was long!!!

One post on Facebook by Nancy Lowe claimed Mr Young was a sick individual and people should not follow Mission Beach News, a seven year old local media outlet sharing local and world news, events  and a few jokes thrown into the mix, however what is not a joke is Nancy Lowe claiming no businesses should give Mr Young any money, basically closing down Mr Young’s business by delusions of grandeur by Nancy Lowe in believing she controls who can run and start a new business in Mission Beach and who gets money, which leads Mission Beach to believe that Nancy Lowe is dishonestly attempting at all costs to close down and ruin Mr Young, even using her powers in the local tourism centres as the president of Tropical Coast Tourism.

The Real “Explore Mission Beach, a registered business of PMAJDT Pty Ltd

Several other matters concerning Nancy Lowe, other community members and Mission Beach Tourism Inc., will be explored in the upcoming “Will The Real Explore Mission Beach Please Stand Up” part two story.

U2 – Not So Fast https://www.missionnews.com.au/u2-not-so-fast/ https://www.missionnews.com.au/u2-not-so-fast/#respond Fri, 15 Jan 2021 18:13:45 +0000 https://www.missionnews.com.au/?p=3129 In late 2019 a small number of community members had planted a fake story that U2 was playing for free in Mission Beach for New Year’s Eve in 2019.

The Queensland Government Department of Justice offers a free mediation service to deal with even very major issues of defamation on a grand scale, such as this matter. exposing the lies of a few people in an attempt to defame Mr Rodney F Young.

Cassowary Coast Independent News (CCIN) had found out the paper was totally lied too dishonestly by a small number of community member, it’s highly recommend to use this free and simple option to resolve these serious issues, that is still causing very serious harm to Mr Young.

Agreement to retract the fake story given to CCIN

Anyone still claiming that U2 was playing for free in Mission Beach for NYE last year (or anytime) doesn’t have any creditably, in fact it’s plain defamation of Mr Young.

Investigations show that one community member spreading the lies about U2 playing for free in Mission Beach was Craig Tatnell of Above Ground Zero Fireworks in Townsville.

Craig Tatnell admitting he was part of planting the fake U2 story in 2019

Mr Tatnell who has now become known in the community as “Pinocchio” had also lied and was dishonest to gain a benefit over another, falsely claiming that anyone is required to be registered in order to fundraise to hold community fireworks in Queensland under the Collections Act 1966 (The Act)

Dishonest Conduct Regarding NYE In Mission Beach https://www.missionnews.com.au/dishonest-conduct-regarding-nye-in-mission-beach/ https://www.missionnews.com.au/dishonest-conduct-regarding-nye-in-mission-beach/#respond Fri, 21 Feb 2020 14:42:33 +0000 https://www.missionnews.com.au/?p=2266 Important information has been received by Mission Beach News that is a serious public concern in the upcoming Cassowary Coast Regional Council elections, that is in the communities best interest to know the information.

Division 3 candidate Hilary Watson has been publicly claiming that Mrs Watson was involved with the New Year’s Eve fireworks last year, other information attained by Mission Beach News states Mrs Watson as a co-host on the official event page for the New Year’s Eve fireworks in Mission Beach last year.

Information attained by MBN is that a deliberate falsehood was made in order to take over the New Year’s Eve fireworks contract already in place by the New Years Eve Association.

Craig Tatnell from Above Ground Zero Fireworks was directly contacted by Mrs Watson in the first instance in November 2019, raising one of many concerns that the New Years Eve Association (NYEA) was never registered/approved to raise funding for the community New Year’s Eve fireworks event.

Registration in order to fundraise in Queensland falls under the Collections Act 1966 (the Act) for a charitable or community purpose to seek donations from the public.

Craig Tatnell made the claim to end the contract on the 14/11/2019 to the NYEA that they had incontrovertible evidence from government agencies, that the NYEA was not registered to raise funds nor could directly approach likely donors to seek any funding.

This claim is a deliberate falsehood given the attached information attained by Mission Beach News from the office of the Attorney-General, Minister for Justice, Leader of the House.

The Honourable Yvette D’Ath for Redcliffe had requested her Chief of Staff, James Sullivan, to respond on her behalf on a formal request for the Minister to determine, if community fireworks was a purpose to seek funds and that required approval, under certain provisions of the Collections Act 1966.

The information written on the 20/12/2019 by the Ministers office, that is the final say on this matter under certain provisions of the Act.

This information from the Ministers office has completely given incontrovertible evidence that the claim the NYEA must be registered is deliberately false and completely dishonest as they had claimed their proof was directly from the government.

On the 5th of December 2019 Craig Tatnell had made a public comment on a post on his business Facebook page.

“Actually It worked a treat! Don’t worry it was very well thought out in close consultation with others and the problem seems to be resolved” Craig Tatnell

A honest opinion by any reasonable person would mean Hilary Watson was one of these other people, when it was very well thought out in close consultation with others, claiming information that is a deliberate falsehood and completely dishonest.

Mission Beach News reached out to Hilary Watson yesterday to give Mrs Watson an opportunity for a comment on the record regarding this matter, no reply has been received to date.

The above information is not an isolated matter in dishonest conduct & false claims with the information attained by Mission Beach News, that will be reported in due course to the public, connected to the New Year’s Eve event last year.

The dishonest conduct also includes the libellous story by Sean Dent from the Cassowary Coast Independent News on the 14/11/2019 who claimed key information had came from Craig Tatnell, who has now been exposed to the public as one of the people in the above deliberately false claims.

Sean Dent has been requested to prove his story on the 14/11/2019 more than once and has failed to provide any proof to any of the story claims to date.

This information is in the best interest of the community to know that a candidate running for councillor, who is claiming to be honest and have integrity on her official election page Hilary Watson – 2020 Div. 3 Candidate – Cassowary Coast Regional Council

Mayfair 101 Tourism Mecca – Is It a Slam Dunk For Mission Beach https://www.missionnews.com.au/mayfair-101-tourism-mecca-is-it-a-slam-dunk-for-mission-beach/ https://www.missionnews.com.au/mayfair-101-tourism-mecca-is-it-a-slam-dunk-for-mission-beach/#respond Tue, 11 Feb 2020 05:21:01 +0000 https://www.missionnews.com.au/?p=2168 Last year, just before the sale of Dunk Island freehold was formally announced to the public, MBN was in close contact with previous owner Adam Bond where we discussed the misinformation in the mainstream media.

Largely we talked about the media couldn’t even get the sellers name right using Adam’s fathers name that had nothing to do with the freehold from 2016 or the sale of the old island resort.

Also discussed was the amount published for the asking price of $20 million that was a made up amount by the media, there was no public listing price on the island freehold.

To end the seemingly endless speculation, Mr Bond had sent MBN a last statement by the family when the sale was final before being made public.

Mr Bond also passed on the contact details of MBN directly to the new buyers letting them know it would be prudent to engage with MBN. Given the nature MBN worked with the Bond’s in releasing information to the public.

Dunk Island

After being contacted by the new owners directly, the first question was the island freehold still in Australian hands and it was great to hear a big YES. The new owner really liked the idea put forward by MBN in that phone call, to bring back the old resort day pass, as it helps the wider community.

While the call was cut short, after all, you need to deal with kids sometimes. details to the PR team were advised and a press release was supplied on the sale with the buyers texting what a great story was done and he would ensure the other owner and both would meet personally in the short term.

A meeting was arranged with the newly appointed CEO of Mayfair Iconic Properties Stuart Duplock heading the $1.6 billion proposed investment in our community.

Long story short, the meeting was called off with Mr Duplock in early October, hours before the meeting by phone was to take place. It was to be rescheduled and has never been rescheduled to date.

This is why if you asked a question in the original post below it went unanswered and as one person stated, someone has egg on their face for not keeping the meeting.

Community poll on is Mayfair 101 giving the community details to their master plan.

Given community members had asked very important questions in the original post comments (below post), that may have taken time to answer for Mayfair 101 and not in the first 30 minute phone call and MBN made people aware of this fact.

All the questions were asked in good faith that the community believed the new buyers cared about community engagement and working with MBN to inform the wider community what will happen with this enormous $1.6 billion investment.

MBN was going to put forward the proposal in the first meeting, than just answering our community questions in print, that Stuart would be able to introduce himself to the community on camera, than answer some simple questions that the community wanted to know, where he could answer.

Of course it would have been Mr Duplock’s decision that was the best way forward for the $1.6 billion project to really engage with the wider community from day one.

The whole community would like to see in person, the man who is in charge of such a big project and not hidden from the common people, a more personal approach it was believed by MBN.

That could have been a much better outcome in community engagement and honestly from a investor standpoint, a company willing to give the community information on their concerns only gives investors a better interest in handing over 100’s of million of dollars in a small community.

Serious questions are raised when you’re not very open in such a small community where everyone should know what is happening, than just a select amount of people that only care about the money they will make out of this development.

While very disappointing that Mayfair 101 can not keep their first meeting, only really to discuss how the best way would be to keep the wider Mission Beach community informed of important details and real concerns,

The only public information to come from Mayfair 101 is focused solely towards only investors and not answering the real community concerns publicly, when Mayfair 101 have not been here for more than 5 minutes basically,.

It’s our community they have entered and we must know simple and very important questions, than just some investor spin to make the $1.6 billion project get the funding it requires.

it only appears in any information given to the public from Mayfair 101 it’s only directed to how great the project will be for our area, nothing more.

Honestly, has anyone seen any real publicly released details on the whole plan for Mission Beach?,

Mission Beach from Bicton Hill (Clump Point National Park)

it seems that the wider community will only know, once everything is approved and we must take what Mayfair 101 tells the community than everyones feedback, where only key people really know what Mission Beach will become.

This raises more serious questions than announcing a $1.6 billion project before any real due diligence on what the whole community would like in our two world heritage sites, given the scale of investment proposed.

Mission Beach is basically the birthplace of both the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park & the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area

This great work was done in Mission Beach by John BĂĽsst and close friend Prime Minister Harold Holt with the help from poet Judith Wright, and scientists Webb & Tracey in the 1960’s and early 1970’s.

That work lead to the protection of both the Great Barrier Reef & Wet Tropics Rainforest. Later to become the world heritage sites we now know across Queensland and the world.

These deeply fought out campaigns were supported by local and international scientists and aimed to protect the Great Barrier Reef and the area’s tropical rainforest’s from serious development and mining pressures.

When Mr BĂĽsst had seen a notice in the Innisfail paper with plans to mine limestone from nearby Ellison Reef, he fought the companies plans to mine the so-called dead reef and won, the rest is history.

Given the rich environmental history of Mission Beach, the real question to Mayfair 101 is did they even know this and how hard people fight in this area for the environment?

if the answer is no, than they had totally failed in their due diligence as they were way to fast to walk into every real estate office and buy whatever property was for sale.

© Copyright Robert Tidey | All Rights Reserved – Dad & Peanut

You can see how important the environment is to people in the good faith questions. MBN main question would have been with over 20 Cassowaries killed by cars over the last four years alone, that nothing is working to protect the Cassowary.

What will a $1.6 billion project do to really help the Cassowary, once the serious increase in road traffic starts with unknown plans to make Mission Beach a tourism mecca.

The key thing that makes the Cassowary Coast and Mission Beach, the official Cassowary capital of the world, is the Cassowary itself, mostly everyone that comes to Mission Beach is very hopeful they can see a bird in the wild.

The Cassowaries can’t handle the current traffic levels now, let alone a $1.6 billion tourism mecca that will only result in investors getting rich, while the keystone (Cassowary) of the tens of million’s year old rainforest, may just get wiped out as there’s nothing now working to really protect the birds from cars, dogs and even feral pigs eating their eggs.

Due diligence is about what a community is all about before you walk in the door 5 minutes ago, does Mayfair 101 even know any history about John BĂĽsst and this area before buying every property in sight in make a profit.

While environment studies have been commission as reported, it will fail to look at the real concerns & history of Mission Beach and only focused on making sure the major developments are approved.

The money for the development of Clump Point was in place for years and years before approval was given, and a lot of people believe that is enough development for the next 10-15 year in our community.

Recently, a intergraded development in Kuranda was disallowed by Main Roads as the developer could not address the increase in traffic, this proposed “ECO” development was a third of the value of the proposed project for Mission Beach.

The increase in traffic would most likely be even worst on the access roads into Mission Beach than in the “ECO” development in Kuranda, creating a worst issue for the Cassowaries and other endangered wildlife in a world heritage area,

At the end of the day, Mission Beach is an island in two world heritage areas.

Without answering some very important questions before buying one property in this area with such a huge integrated development proposed, is hardly doing their real due diligence of Mission Beach in what makes the area so special,

Just seeing low dollar signs on property that wasn’t selling and profits they expected for investors is very concerning for one buyer to own so much property, creating a monopoly in a small community with too much power to stop anything, given the investment proposed.

A great saying in Mission Beach, if you want to make a million dollars here, bring two million dollars, than stop spending after you waste a million dollars. What will $1.6 billion do in the same saying.

The whole community deserves to know what their community will become with more than just rumours and second hand information.

Not one of the owners standing in front of Mayfair 101 marketing boards in the Village Green telling the investors what they want to hear to get the funding.

That is not the Mission Beach way, maybe on the red carpet at the TV Logie awards, but hardly what our community requires or wants. More of a show than anything to look good on the photo’s for marketing to investors.

Marketing boards at a community meeting in the Village Green tells a big story, it was never for the community, that’s not what Mission Beach is about, will we need a red carpet in the next community meeting?

MBN reached out to the new owners who contacted MBN directly at the personal advice of Adam Bond, about the disappointment in not keeping to their invite and meeting months ago.

Stuart Duplock has not replied to our request by email that MBN was going to do a story very soon over a week ago.

MBN will have to report on the development to keep our community informed without Mayfair 101’s support,, even after it was made clear to the owners directly it was in their best interest to do this from Mr Bond.

Contact Mission Beach News to tip us off on any information, including if your property sale didn’t happen as it’s been reported a number of sales failed.

Survey seeks to shape future of skin cancer prevention https://www.missionnews.com.au/survey-seeks-to-shape-future-of-skin-cancer-prevention/ https://www.missionnews.com.au/survey-seeks-to-shape-future-of-skin-cancer-prevention/#respond Fri, 04 Oct 2019 05:03:05 +0000 https://www.missionnews.com.au/?p=1594 Public health experts are one step closer to answers on how best to decrease skin cancer rates, following the launch of a Queensland-wide survey on sun protection.

Cancer Council Queensland’s Everyday Health Survey seeks to gain understanding of Queenslanders’ knowledge and behaviours towards sun protection and explore how the community wants to be informed about skin cancer prevention and early detection. This in turn will inform the charity’s advocacy priorities, community programs and research agenda.

Cancer Council Queensland CEO Ms Chris McMillan called on Queenslanders to complete the online survey and have their say on skin cancer prevention.

“We want to get a snapshot of Queenslanders’ knowledge of sun protective behaviours and their habits,” Ms McMillan said.

“Survey respondents will also have their say on education and awareness, including whether they are in favour of a mass media campaign to inform Queenslanders about sun protection and early detection of skin cancer.

“This community survey will give the public a voice, allow us to develop initiatives and strategies to help the community reduce their risk of skin cancer, and assist in guiding our advocacy priorities.”

Queensland has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world with around 3700 people diagnosed with melanoma and more than 360,000 non-melanoma skin cancers removed annually.

“Almost all skin cancers, including melanoma, are caused by over-exposure to UV radiation from the sun, meaning skin cancer is almost entirely preventable,” Ms McMillan said.

“We’re calling on all Queenslanders aged 18 and over to take part in our Everyday Health Survey and have their say, so we can help protect everyone from skin cancer.”

This is the sixth Everyday Health Survey that Cancer Council Queensland has conducted. The surveys are designed to give Queenslanders a voice and engage them in a conversation about the health issues that affect all members of the community.

Queenslanders can complete Cancer Council Queensland’s Everyday Health Survey online at cancerqld.org.au/everydayhealthsurvey. The survey closes on Friday, November 29.

More information about Cancer Council Queensland is available via 13 11 20 or cancerqld.org.au.

About skin cancer and sun protection

  • Two in three Queenslanders will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 75.
  • Decreasing melanoma incidence rates in Queenslanders under 40 years old and plateauing rates in those aged 40-59 over the last decade highlights the benefit of sustained implementation of skin cancer prevention programs as well as skin cancer prevention and early detection campaign which were most prominent between 1981-2001.
  • Queenslanders aged 60 and over who did not grow up with prevention campaigns, continue to experience higher rates of melanoma.
  • Sun safety continues to play a major role in preventing skin cancer. Sun protection is required when the UV levels reach 3 and above. In Queensland, sun protection is required all year due to consistently high UV levels.
  • Most skin cancers can be successfully treated if found early. It’s important that Queenslanders to get to know their own skin and if they notice a new spot or lesion, or a spot or lesion change in shape, colour or size, to visit a GP immediately.
  • Queenslanders with fair skin, skin that burns easily, the presence of many moles, and a family history of skin cancer are at greater risk of developing melanoma.
