A major development at Mission Beach has been given the tick of approval by the Cassowary Coast Regional Council.
The application for the $70 million staged redevelopment for Castaways Resort went before council at this week’s meeting which includes increasing the number of rooms from 70 to over 200.
Cassowary Coast Deputy Mayor Wayne Kimberley said it’s not often Council gets applications of this calibre on their desk. “It’s no secret that Mission Beach has and will continue to be our tourist hub of the region,” said Cr Kimberley. “This just shows we are sending a clear message to everyone that we are serious about economic activation on the Cassowary Coast.”
During the construction phase the rebuild is expected to generate almost 400 jobs. “Not only will this be a job generator but it will play a major role in tourism injection through enabling a significant increase on our visitor rates and expenditure with local suppliers,” said Cr Kimberley.
Councillor Glenn Raleigh questioned whether the increased storey height was an issue with residing neighbours. “Out of 55 submissions we received 58% in support of the development, while 42% raised objections,” said a CCRC Planning Officer. “
Through the assessment it’s been determined that the height will not have a direct impact on any of the adjoining properties due to the large set back. “The proposal incorporates a considerable amount of design elements that will minimise any impacts, including a stepped building profile, significant landscaped setbacks from Pacific Parade, building apertures, and basement car parking.”
The application received overwhelming support with a unanimous vote by Councillors.
Councillor Rick Taylor declared a material personal interest due to a business relationship and left the meeting room taking no part in the discussion or vote.
